The construction
The thermal baths were built around the II century b.C.
The thermal baths were one of the principal places where Roman people could meet, relax and socialize. At the thermal baths everybody could access, also popular class because the entrance was free. Firstly thermal baths were situated near the natural sources, afterwards in the city centre too.
Function of establishments
Thermal baths were a succession of rooms: at the centre there was “frigidario”, where there were cold water baths, after “tepidario”, where there were warm water baths and at the end there was “calidario” where there were hot water baths.
Internal construction
Around these principal places there were the swimming-pool, the apodyterium, where people could change their clothes, the sauna where people could relax and gym, where people could train.
Thermal baths in Vicenza
Vicenza became a town hall under the family “Giulio-Claudia” in 49 b.C. : thanks to it even the city of Vicenza was enriched with the thermal baths. The remains of the thermal baths were recovered in “Contrà Pescherie Vecchie” where it is possible to visit them at “Pizzeria Paradiso”.
